PURITY
PURITY – Between Stone and Prayer
180x140cm (71x55in)
Acrylic on linen
This painting tells a deeply Cambodian story, where sacred history and present day spirituality meet in the gaze of a young novice monk.
In the background rise the serene faces of the Bayon Temple, at the heart of Angkor Thom in Siem Reap. These enigmatic stone visages, believed to represent King Jayavarman VII, embody the timeless stillness of Buddhist wisdom carved in ancient rock.
At the center stands a child monk, wrapped in saffron robes, symbolizing hope, purity, and the sacred transmission of wisdom. In his hands, he holds a lotus flower, a powerful symbol in Cambodian culture. The lotus, rising unsoiled from muddy waters, reflects spiritual awakening, resilience, and beauty emerging from adversity.
The contrast between the eternal stone and the fragile human life speaks to a balance: a bridge between past and future, tradition and renewal.
Purity is a visual offering, a meditation on peace, heritage, and spiritual rebirth.
